D.U.I.- Driving under the influence. Most states make it illegal to drive while you are impaired by alcohol or drugs.

D.W.I.- Driving while intoxicated. Most states make it illegal to drive while you are impaired by alcohol or drugs.

deuce- A drunk driving charge. The term is slang usually used by law enforcement and attorneys.

hit and run- The act of a driver who is involved in a collision with another vehicle and then fails to stop to exchange information as required by law.

intoxication- A person is legally intoxicated when impaired to such a level the person is a danger to him or herself or to others. Drunk driving laws set intoxication as that level of impairment where one cannot operate a vehicle in a reasonably safe manner. Most states have laws establishing presumptive levels of intoxication. In many states that level is .08.

no fault insurance- A system of automobile insurance where one collects from his or her own insurance company regardless of who is at fault for the accident.

reckless driving- The dangerous and careless operation of a motor vehicle such that it creates a substantial certainty that harm will ensue from the circumstances. Most common forms of such behavior involve driving while impaired from alcohol or drugs.

total loss- A vehicle is declared a total loss if the cost of repairing the vehicle is greater than the value of the vehicle.

uninsured motorist- Automobile insurance coverage allowing for recovery when one is injured due to the negligence of a person without liability insurance coverage.

vehicular manslaughter- The unintentional killing of a human being by the reckless use of an automobile. Most criminal charges are based on impaired driving as the result of drug and/or alcohol use.

wet reckless- Alcohol-related reckless driving. In many states it is used as a plea bargain rather than pleading guilty to drunk driving. Such a plea is used where the blood alcohol level is less than the legal limit. The punishment usually does not include community service or incarceration.
